- in 1987 Andew Tanenbaum writes a Unix kernel for his OS classes for IBM PC's
-> MINIX (then Copyrighted, since 2000 BSD License)
- Linus Torvalds starts a free Unix clone for Intel 80386 CPUs (first Intel with MMU features) in 1991:
-> Linux
- Minix served as a Model, but no code from it was used.
- Torvalds chose the GPL (GNU Public License)
