Linux v3.0 released - Repository rename

With the recent release of Linux Kernel Version 3.0 the previously used repository names like "linux-2.6-denx" don't make much sense any longer. We therefore decided to rename our git repositories, and drop the "-2.6" part from their names, so for example the new name of our Linux kernel repository is now http://git.denx.de/?p=linux-denx.git

To avoid breaking any existing scripts or links, we created symlinks from the old names pointing to their new locations, but please try and update your references / links / scripts when you get a chance.

The First Ten Years

Thu May 28 2009

On 1 July 2009, DENX Software Engineering celebrate their 10th anniversary.

Founded a decade ago, DENX were one of the very first companies in Europe who focussed on using Free Software for Embedded and Real-Time Systems.

At that time, putting Linux into a real system like a DVR or a mobile crane was a real adventure - sometimes it took more convincing on both engineering and management levels than actual software development efforts. Today Embedded Linux has become a matter of course. DENX are proud to have been part of that development right from the beginning - going where there was no path and helping to pave a trail.

Looking back at 10 interesting and successful years, we see a sound base for continued growth and continued success, for interesting new projects - with even bigger challenges waiting for us in the decades to come.

Thanks a lot to everybody who escorted DENX on that way - customers, partners, engineers and everybody who helped that DENX became what we are today. And of course thanks a lot to the Free Software community that made all this possible in the first place.

Xenomai/SOLO - RTOS emulation for standard Linux

DENX Software Engineering is proud to announce Xenomai/SOLO, the new RTOS emulator that runs as a normal user-space application on a standard Linux kernel. Of course, when timing requirements have to be met, a real-time capable Linux kernel with the PREEMPT_RT support enabled should be used.

Philippe Gerum, the author of the code, writes:

Some weeks ago, I started laying the groundwork for porting the Xenomai emulators natively over the PREEMPT_RT kernel. Unlike the co-kernel based Xenomai version, SOLO does not require any kernel support from additional modules or patches. It is fully based on the standard POSIX library, and runs as a regular process controlled by a single image Linux kernel.

As a first step, a VxWorks emulator has just been rebuilt over this new framework.

This framework is not another window-dressing of the existing Xenomai 2.x core, but really something 100% redesigned and rewritten for running on a native real-time Linux implementation, while keeping the opportunity to adapt it back to a co-kernel system. At some point, I'd like to make both the native and co-kernel Xenomai incarnations converge on the basis of this new core interface for Xenomai 3, so that we would be able to share the APIs between them. In short, SOLO is a necessary intermediate step on the road to Xenomai 3.

This work has been co-sponsored by the OSADL and DENX Software Engineering.

For details, please see the README.

You can pull the whole code from git://www.denx.de/git/xenomai-solo.git resp. http://www.denx.de/git/xenomai-solo.git or browse it online.
